About

This exhibition explores and conveys the significance of sound and sound cultures in Copenhagen, highlighting the importance of sound and technology throughout the city's history. This marks the first major exhibition at Danish cultural history museums to place sound at the center of focus.

The exhibition delves into the sounds and listening cultures of 19th-century Copenhagen from 1790 to 1920, a period characterized by rapid industrialization and urban growth. It brings Copenhagen's shifting soundscape to life and invites visitors to experience the city in new ways through listening.

The first room explores the noise of the city, immersing visitors in the overwhelming soundscapes of the past, including the harbor, factories, Tivoli fireworks, bicycle bells, and the chimes of City Hall. In this first room, we worked with over 300 different sounds that play throughout the space. The second room focuses on voices, revealing how street cries, bells, and instruments have shaped communication and power in the city.

This project was created in collaboration with YOKE.
